    I have Pitbull adopted from shelter at 4yo, now 8, he’s struggling with reactive issues. We haven’t been able to have family or friends to our home in a few years and his walks are done hiking in the forest where we are much less likely to run into ppl. We can’t even walk him in our neighborhood. He’s bitten a neighbor and nipped many times at ppl in our home. We are at a loss of how to help him, we have no qualified trainers in the area. He’s great with us, our cats & most of the time neighborhood dogs who run loose, we have a large fenced in yard in the country.

    Now my 14 pound, 8 year old Chihuaussie Luke will often be leash aggressive... towards most big dogs, some people (*usually they are people who turn out to be not trustworthy in my experiences), moving cars, lawn mowers, most motorcycles and a few bikes... and of course cats and SQUIRRELS!!!! And the fence at the dog park between the small and big dog sides makes a great place for him and his big dog friends to bark, growl, and snap at each other before or while they start racing back and forth along the fence. Rarely will he react to a bigger dog on the same side of the fence (whether one on the small dog side or if we are on the big dog side, the latter being much rarer due to my bad knee). Now his younger sister Ginger from the second litter, at 18 pounds and 6 years old, is much less aggressive on the leash or the fence, LOVES people, and tolerates most dogs. Cats and squirrels are prime targets for chasing, and she spends most of her time at the dog park in a shady spot near the outside fence watching the wildlife. I would love to walk them more like I used to do, but the knee pain can get intense. Note that both dogs have killed mice, voles, etc... Ginger dug up and killed a chipmunk hiberating in a leaf pile (Luke tried to lick him awake for the next week, everytime we were outside... Both of them merely sniffed and licked a squirrel that ran into them... Luke likes to play with most animals, like he does with puppies... "You chase me and I chase you" or "You bark and lunge at me and I do it back,,, ad infiniteum"... Not as sure about Ginger, but she has met several baby geese and fledgelings on their own... went up and sniffed and did not attack them at all.

    My dogs recall is horrible if he sees a small critter but he likes his freedom. I use a retractable to hike mountains and do overnighters. He is ridiculous good and not getting tangled up in trees and rocks while still searching the trail for critters.

    Great info. My puppy, as you put it, was dealing with reactive behaviors around everything. Over time, with training, he has come to accept a number of previously scary situations. His last hold out is nervousness around other dogs. It's really hard to find controlled situations where he can experience other dogs in a neutral fashion.

    what do I do when the puppy doesn't let you walk away and keeps biting your ankles??

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining 6 днів тому

      The main thing is setting up the environment so your puppy can't follow you. Puppies should have a very small universe, to begin with. This is partly to make your management easier and so you can move to where the puppy can't follow. Then, you establish a history of follow-through. Puppy bites, you say, "Ouch." If your puppy reels it in, praise and continue. If your puppy comes in again, say "OUCH!" If the puppy reels it in, praise and continue. If your puppy comes in again and/or gets too intense, you eject, dip out, bail. Play and interactivity completely stop. 60 seconds later, come back and try again. This won't work the 1st time or the 5th time. But by the 25th or 30th, the dots start to connect, and your puppy learns to reel it in when they hear "ouch" because they don't want you to leave. Now, they're learning how to develop self-control. Hope that helps!

    "Lure" and "Bribe" seem like the same thing. I don't understand how/why they're different. Note: if someone tries to explain it by merely quoting the video, then you're wasting everyone's time.

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining 6 днів тому

      When you use Lure-Reward Training, you're only using the lure to get the dog to move in a certain way, or to perform some mechanical action they otherwise wouldn't do in that situation. Most often, lures are food, but in some training situations it's not (e.g., if I wanted to teach a dog to Speak, I might use a knock at a door to prompt barking that I could then put on cue, or "stimulus control"). The most important part of ALL Lure-Reward Training is to phase out the lure as soon as possible. A lure is just to jumpstart the behavior, not to maintain it. In contrast, a bribe is almost always food (or a toy) and the dog will not perform without first seeing the food or toy. Sometimes this is caused by using a lure too long, or overusing it, etc. Sometimes it happens by chance just because of repeated use in a certain situation. So, a lure is a short lived training tool that's pretty easy to phase out (sometimes in the first day), whereas a bribe is a long-standing hostage negotiation and very difficult to phase out by that point. Additionally, as I said, lures don't even always have to be physical objects, whereas a bribe always is. Hope that helps a little bit.

    Hi Ian. Some of the advice I was given was that you turn yourself into a giant squeaky toy doing this. I’m convinced after watching your video that this is wrong, is the key here to use a lower voice when saying “Ow” and keeping it low key rather than a high pitched exciting “Ow”?

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining 18 днів тому

      Correct. And, also following up by leaving the area if the puppy doesn't back off. The consistent follow through is what really sells the "Ouch" as a warning that play is going to stop.

    When we try this our puppy starts barking loudly and continuously at us. Any ideas how to stop this?

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining 18 днів тому

      Barking is a secondary behavior. Don't worry about it right now-it's just frustration. That's something that will taper off as they figure out how to interact appropriately and build better communication methods with you. Stay focused on the main job which is bite inhibition and don't get distracted by barking.

    hi! thanks for making this video, this makes loads more sense than the other advice i’ve seen. i do have a question though. what should i do if my puppy isn’t responding to the “ouch!” noises i’m making? she doesn’t seem to understand that it hurts. (she’s a golden retriever, 9 weeks old as of tuesday). walking away only seems to work if she’s in her playpen, so should i be using her playpen a lot more?

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining 18 днів тому

      That is correct. It's important that she cannot follow you and good environmental management is crucial with a puppy. If you're outside the pen, use a tether or back-tie (as long as that doesn't stress her out).

    Really great. 3 month old Aussie, we've been on the right track more or less - But we've been "protecting" our senior Lab (11 years) from our landshark; This video is terrific and reminded me that the absolute best teachers of bite inhibition are....other dogs with good bite inhibition. Bob (our Lab) is super patient but when he reaches his limit, he gives a good snarl and shows those pearly whites. She backs off and looks at him in stunned admiration. We'll be doing more of this! How did I not find you guys earlier???

    Thanks for this! It's amazing! I don't know if you'll see this, but I have a question: my puppy is very good at not biting my hands or my clothes, but tends to get really overexcited when I have a toy in my hand. He often misses the toy and bites my hand instead. I know he doesn't mean to, but how do I teach him to be careful then?

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining 26 днів тому

      For me the best way to deal with that is to focus on how I'm presenting the toy. I want to make sure I'm presenting a clear bite surface and keeping my hands out of the way. This helps improve the skill of targeting (think of it like eye-mouth coordination). Always try to keep the toy perpendicular to the mouth; if you swing out or rotate and you thus move your hands in the way, well, that was on you. Of course, misses are inevitable, so some of the same feedback you use for the regular puppy biting will help with this too. For example, a yelp and stop play for 15 to 30 seconds will demonstrate how hitting you is an impediment to play. This tends to sew it up pretty quickly for most pups.

    Maahh. Yummy Stuff, even own food, gets stuck in there and he can't get it out anyway and it's a waste. Did freeze smooth soup stock/broth inside so it defrosts and comes out and it's affordable too. But that's not very enticing on outside. Can smother outside with peanut butter but it's a lot of peanut butter if he has it regularly. Not too many ideas here but like the yoghurt idea frozen over the outside!!! With soup stock frozen inside.

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining 26 днів тому

      As long as it's not frozen like a brick, almost right away. However, I'd advocate for hand feeding or forage feeding and waiting on a Kong perhaps until 18 weeks. You get a lot more relationship building and enrichment this way in that critical first few weeks with them.
